Soul food for Sundays - Volunteer in Chennai

Like many, I have been "looking" to do volunteering work for some time now. I started checking out a few years back, found a place and then got caught up in the churn of daily routines.

Finally, last month, I started checking out again and found a few options for volunteering in Chennai.

  1. http://chennaivolunteers.org/ - Lists a lot of options, nicely consolidated website
  2. Reading sessions at Padma Seshadri Bala Bavan School [PSBB], Habibulla Road, T Nagar,

As I had checked the 2nd one earlier, thought of exploring it further and sent an email to Shankar about whether it is still on. Got a nice email with a blog post and FAQ about reading for Visually challenged students in PSBB, T. Nagar.
The place is near Valluvar kottam and provides a chance to read to Visually challenged students in Tamil & English.

Reading for Visually challenged , PSBB, T. Nagar
So, I want on sunday, 26th Oct. Reached there early by about 9.45 and a Sai Bhajan was going on. By 10.30, there was a bunch of students and the organizers started calling out "Tamil", "English" etc. You step in, get assigned and start.

I guess, nothing can be made easier than this - No signup,s fuss, formalities. Just show up and help.

I got to read for a student studying Phd in "Social conciousness in Tamil literature", and that day he wanted to go over a few poems of Kaviarasu kannadasan. Got as chance to read a few wonderful poems of Kannadasan (First time for me).

It was an excellent experience to see about 50 students full of Energy, Happiness, and Hope. They are not sorry. They were never worried. They are not helpless. They never talk about what they don't have. Each one is having plans about future - Studies, Job, Marriage and what not.
It was an amazing feeling. They have friends and there was so much bon-homie and laughter. There were Phd students, BEd students, PG, UG students, those who are working/training as teachers etc. Their self confidence is amazing.

I was very comfortable. The organizers/organization was focussed. No unnecessary formalities. Job simply getting done. It was very gratifying to also see the set of volunteers made up of a good mix of youth, middle-aged as well as senior citizens of both genders.

I thank them for the wonderful opportunity to utilize myself for something useful. Not to forget the Coffee, Biscuits and the lunch we had that day - simple and tasty to wrap up a very satisfying sunday morning.

Address is Padma Seshadri Bala Bavan School [PSBB], Habibulla Road, T Nagar, Chennai
Timings - Sunday mornings 10.30 to 12.30
Check out the article and Frequently asked questions - http://scribes-readers.blogspot.in/2007/08/reading-session-for-visually-challenged.html
Check out some pictures  - http://picasaweb.google.com/scopeon2002/SundayReadingSessionAtTNagarChennai#

They are in need of people, both for Tamil and English. Check out or walk in on Sunday mornings. The schedule is very nice - like IPL session about 2-3 hours max.

Some soul food is good for Sundays.

Bangalore garbage problem - IITian appointed to handle the Solid Waste Management issues

The problem of garbage in Bangalore is reaching unmanageable proportions. After the recent demonstrations by villages in Mandur etc, the government has finally sat up and taking notice.

A lot of action seems to be happening and one of it to appoint an IIT-ian, Mr. Darpan Jain as the special commissioner for Solid waste management in Bangalore.

Hope he will come up with innovative ideas and ensure their implementations to solve the problem - http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/Garbage-crisis-IITian-is-ready-for-the-challenge/articleshow/37274277.cms

Here, we need to understand - We cannot just put our hands up and push ALL the responsibility to the government.

The waste is being generated in Our homes, Our restaurants, Our hotels, Our hospitals, Our offices,
Our residential complexes, and Our factories!. We need to make efforts to segregate and help towards a cleaner Bangalore and a cleaner India. It is not just enough to discuss, but action needs to be done.

Simple thing to start at homes would be to keep a separate bin for degradeable (kitchen waste) Vs non-degradeable items in other words Wet vs Dry items.

At commercial establishments, it is much easier to segregate different qualities of dry waste and even get some money for them.

Most of the industries are well equipped and well versed in taking recycleable inputs and hence are eager to pay a price for them. The minimum we can do is to make it easy recycleable inputs since they are off the landfills!

India, Cigarette packets warnings to cover 85% of space and on both sides - only one regret

Cigarette smoking is injurious to health!

Not that you need to hear it from me, but just recently I went and met the father of my friend, a jovial, active  and energetic person, who is now suffering from severe COPD, and is severely restricted in movements due to the oxygen tube that he needs to use almost for 24 hours a day.

About four of my friends/associates are into smoking and all are well educated, (graduates and double graduates), intelligent and able to defend their actions in rational or irrational arguments.

As the link between smoking and various illnesses and ailments are becoming more and more clear and published, I hope this crazy habit will see its end soon.

The companies are squeezing life out of every smoker and filling the coffers. I don't know what logic or justification they have to continue to sell this slow poison.

So, it is with happy feeling that I welcome a very good step in one of the many steps towards reducing Cigarette smoking in India. I hope and wish that the government does not stop here and continue the many steps towards reducing Cigaratte smoking in India. Just like Polio eradication and TB eradication, I think we need a tobacco eradication program for India.

Here is the link to the article that talks about the government move - http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-10-16/news/55107234_1_pictorial-warnings-health-warnings-proposed-warnings

  1. To increasing the pictorial warning to 85% of the package. - 60% picture and 25% text. I would say a picture speaks a 1000 words, 85% picture would've been good.
  2. Further it also moves the companies towards removing the glossy packaging and making them plain - to reduce the attraction for youth.
  3. The warnings are to be done on both sides of the packet.

The health minister Harsh Vardhan, has said that they have made a Number of suggestions on curbing tobacco consumption and this is just one of them. Good!

The only regret in this the date of implementation is fixed as Apr 1, 2015. There is a saying "Subhasha seekram" - If it is a good thing, do it fast. Would've been good if the implementation date is earlier.

Anyway, Kudos to the Health ministry and to the government in thinking and implementing these steps.

If you do know of any organization(s) that are helping smokers quit or fighting against smoking, please add as comment or email me. I will update the post.

Social Evil - 1 of 3. Drug usage on the rise among India's youth

When I studied my Engineering about 20 years back in Chennai, we used to hear about drugs on-and-off. Mainly there used to be rumors that certain group(s) of students would do drugs on special occasions (college day celebrations) in some forsaken place.

But, recently it seems the drug usage among youth/teens/college and even schools students is heavily on the rise.

Too many news items of late. Just a 5 minute search on google throws up so much
Woman arrested with 21kg marijuana
Drug addiction among students on the rise

if you think only Bangalore has a problem, check out Pune - Here and here  and about Chandigarh - Chandigarh youth turn slave to drugs and 27 Kgs of Heroin seized!

A combination of factors seem to be fanning the fire!

More money in the hands of the youth, More exposure and hence confusions on rights and wrongs, Confusions over rights and responsibilities, Terrible pressure - Peer pressure, pressure from Media, pressure from competitions for everything - from college seats to sweetheart's hearts.

On the other hand, seems the crooks have gotten brazen, the hierarchy and levels of playing fields extend to the gates of schools and houses, Greed has taken over good and common sense with some of the enforcers also taking part in the crime.

It is a killer for our future generation, they being harmed mentally and physically. Just read this story about a eighteen year old girl who got addicted to drugs even before her 10th standard and how it consumed her.

Once they get into the habit, sadly they don't realize the effects it has on their physique , their minds and their family members.

With such a mushrooming of the problem, it is very good timing that Prime minister Narendra Modi has started a debate/discussion on this and is planning to talk about it on his next Mann Ki Baath.
http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-pm-narendra-modi-invites-views-experiences-on-dealing-with-menace-of-drugs-2031979. Please check the links and place your views to save the youth of India

Here is a prayer for those victims - To get a better frame of mind, Understand the implications and Be able to resist the temptations and live their lives to the fullest.

Transparency in the Indian Central government

The new government seems to be taking serious steps towards transparency and clean goveranance. The list of assets and liabilities of all ministers in the Union council is listed in pmindia.gov.in.

Good job!

Festival of lights in Pakistan - A good news

Saw in papers today about the festival of lights being celebrated in Pakistan, with official posters and declaration of holiday for senate etc.

While Economic times states "Pakistan enthusiastically celebrates Diwali", the Hindu writes "Diwali lights across the border"

Found a nicer note and the official posters another blog -
http://www.anindianmuslim.com/2014/10/diwali-celebrations-in-sindh-and-other.html

Here is the picture and news from "Pakistan Hindu Council" website.
Diwali in Pakistan - Girl playing with Fireworks
Diwali in Pakistan

This is very good news!

Seems these have been happening earlier too, but hoping that this is sustained and is a good start of better relationships.

Not just for Pakistan and India, but a good gesture towards inclusive society and sharing happiness with community irrespective of their majority/minority status will improve compassion and reduce the conflicts everywhere.

RTI Replies to be posted online from Nov 1 2014

Interesting announcement from the government to place all RTI replies online from Nov 01 2014. News link
http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-10-22/news/55318960_1_rti-act-upa-government-transparency

The advantages are there to see
a) Will improve transparency.

b) Will reduce the work load on RTI, since common questions can be answered once and referred rather than spending time.

Hopefully it increases efficiency in answering the more important and specific ones.

At this point, it seems the information will be whetted to remove personal  details before publishing. If that happens, then the worry about personal information being made available publicly will be handled.

Quotable quote - Great minds discuss ideas. where do you spend your time?

Read this quote a few months back and I think it is a very effective one.

It helps you identify where you spend your time and I think it is one of the key traits of successful people, helping them focus their time and attention.

Sharing with you with hope that it helps you too.

"Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people."

Back to blog

Back to blog after more than two years.

Lots and lots of changes in these two years.

Loss of dear ones indicate the whimsical nature of life - Here today, not there tomorrow.

Resolved to help, make a difference, and to bring happiness to others

Swachh Bharath - What a good way to start for a cleaner India

Wonderful start for the cleanliness drive with the Swachh Bharath initiative. Every one of us (Indians and others who visit or see the squalor in movies/images) wished for this for quite a long time.

Kudos to the Prime minister to have taken the broom to set an example - https://in.news.yahoo.com/swachh-bharat-abhiyan-pm-modi-wields-broom-valmiki-044104068.html

Committing myself to a cleaner India in whatever way I can help.

Proud to be part of a Company Sudh-Labh to provide waste management and Engineering services to the waste management industry

Farewell to a friend

I lost my Grandfather a couple days back (21 Aug). He has been a friend and guide to me for many many years and already, I'm missing him in more ways than one. He started his life in a village Kunnisery, Kerala and moved to Vellore town where for many years he worked in Mani's cafe, then on to Bombay for a few years to practice prohitham and finally to Chennai to be with his grandchildren and continue work in the city. He is an old-school, pre-independence days', self-taught Man and one with many amazingly good qualities.

Timeliness and Timelessness: His principle is to be before time for any appointment or event. Everything is planned, everyone pushed, put into action to be before time so that no one should be left waiting. Time is a great tool with him, that he never wasted (When we were kids and used to say - 'We are bored', invariably his reply used to be 'I do not know what is boredom and neither should you'), utilizing every moment fully. He seemed to have an inner clock so that if we promise something in 30 minutes, he would be there in exactly 30 minutes to remind, irrespective of whether there is a clock or watch nearby. At the same time, he always seemed to have time for learning, helping others, or to comfort/encourage anyone with problems. If you had a problem and if you wanted to talk, it is as if he did not have anything to do at all and would give full attention, time and encouraging words. I would especially cherish the many talks that I've had in our terrace after dinner, he sitting on the overhead tank and I walking/talking/discussing my latest projects/plans etc.

Affection: For the 40 years I've known him and more and more in the last 20 years, he showered and blessed everyone with affection. Anyone who has interacted with him for a day or two, is touched - My school/college friends, Nurses in the hospital, physiotherapist, kids, anyone. Never a rude word. Never saying “I am busy”. He had a wonderful working relationship in Vellore where he could borrow money from his boss, try out a venture, close it down and come back and rejoin the same job. Not once but many times and this was 50 years back. He initially earned this by his service, affection, diligence and to many reasons.

Perseverance & Will power: Perseverance has been part of all his life - Surviving droughts, moving to new cities, trying out different businesses, passing through tough times. Till his late 80s he would do exercise of 30 minutes or so, daily in our open terrace. At 91, he had the will power to do exercise in the hospital bed at 3.00 a.m. If something is asked of him with love, he will exert himself, through sheer will power to help, respond to the affection.

Learning: Having gone to school only till 3rd standard, he had an unquenchable thirst for knowing and learning. Nothing stops him from understanding something at its core. He studied the Vedas for many years, studied all kinds of books from great leaders/writers - Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Kanchi seers, Science books, Mystery books, Political books.  During my Engineering days, if he read about any scientific/Electronic news, he would show and discuss with me. When he was about 77, during his trip to U.S., he asked me to explain the internet to him and I drew the various components and explained. When he was 89/90, he read all 10 books of my sister's M.A.”Yoga for Human Excellence” and even discussed, argued and praised various portions of the books. If I had spent a bit more time, I’m sure he would’ve mastered basic internet and mobile phones, latest technology etc.

Enterprise: Part-time business, full time businesses, writing to someone in France to import Chicory to India, Hotels, Selling cloths, many many attempts at entrepreneurship. It certainly rubbed off on my dad who tried various things like newspaper delivery, Liquid Soap/Cleaning powder manufacture, Cloth trading, Fitting emergency lamps etc and to me running a software company. He encouraged and funded my first venture with my friends - Designing and printing PCB boards for a big Car dealer/repair shop.
During the last days in hospital, his one wish after discharge was to be able to help me in my business.

Nationalist: He was a staunch believer in Gandhi and Gandhian Principles. He had taken part in rallies, meetings and demonstrations. He had met leaders like Rajaji, Kamaraj, CS, and others. With an acute interest in politics, He has always been concerned about nation, defense, foreign affairs. Even a week before, on Aug 15th, myself and my wife took his flag (Swaraj flag with Spinning wheel in the middle) and hoisted it in our terrace. He reminded us for hoisting at 8.00 a.m., reminded us to bring it down by 6.00 and rejected our one more request/attempt at washing it (lest it loses its color).

Action: His lifestyle is lead with Action. If there is a chance to act, Convey an opinion, or take a stand, he always did, Ready to raise voice against wrong-doers. When our temple got a new Gurukkal (he was helping till then), he stood against the new management committee to ensure a better livelihood for the new priest. At any point there is no hesitation for repercussions, no waiting for someone to take lead etc. If there is a need to act, he would’ve acted already!.

Family values: Family, Taking care of his grand kids, helping out his son and daughter were always on his mind. He would have a very busy day - Doing poojas in different places, but would invariably rush back home by 2.30 so that in initial days he can pick us up at school and walk us home, and in later days myself and my sister will have someone at home. As soon as we enter, the stove will start. Before we clean ourselves and come to the table, hot food will be ready. He was the caretaker, nurse, confidant for us.

Optimism: His life was full of optimism, improvement, encouragement. No small dreams or wishes for him. All little girls should be as brave as Indira Gandhi. All company owners should thing big, take care of employees and keep growing.  Every student should think big, Invent something or do something special for the country. He was always ready to take challenges including his hospital days and nursing days, ready to exercise a bit more, ready to try to walk a bit more. He was one elder/senior citizen who took to the catheter and diapers so nicely. In his words diapers were "God's gift", mainly because he need not disturb anyone during nights. Always ready to oblige a smile and share a nice gesture.

Respect for labour: He respected the workers/laborers most - Asking the naysayers "If he does not do this will you do it?" Delivery boys used to get something to drink, cleaners, and any labour got much affection, respect and help. Our servant maid will always get coffee first - Not just plain coffee, but with lot of respect. The moment she enters the gate, coffee preparation will start, and before she starts any work, she will have the steaming cup of coffee on hand. When his hotel closed, he had 6 months pay due to his 4 employees. He rejoined his job back at 16Rs/month. Kept 2/Rs out of every pay packet, paid 50ps. To each of them till the due was cleared. He was very impressed in a MacDonalds in U.S. when he saw a man with tie and “manager” badge cleaning the tables. He used to repeat it many times to me and my friends. That was the ethics that he lived by. Anyone who worked got an extra dose of respect from him.

Others before thyself:  He always had time to show concern of others. Immediate questions will be on the person or something important to him. Nothing vague, very specific.
How is your company going? Are you getting orders? Are you hiring new people?
How is your brother doing after the accident? Did you give him money to help?
How is your father doing? Is he recuperating? How is your daughter doing at school?
How is studies going on? Study well, that's the one thing that will stand by you always, in these times.
When we were nursing him, if my dad (his son) or me ask him whether he feels like bathing today, he replies to my dad would be "If you feel strong enough and if you can, then please do it. If you don't feel well, we don't have to have today". For me, it would be  "If you have time, please do it".
When our next door neighbour's baby suddenly fainted, he just picked her up and ran to the nearest hospital without waiting for anything.

This has been such a consistent pattern that at any time his thoughts are about the other person, his concerns, his important things in life, that at some point, we all felt that we don't know him quite enough, since most of the time he showed the interest in us and our priorities.

Service with a smile: Service was never a chore, rather a thing he looked forward to.  Service to loved ones, travelling any distance for a small job or spending a small time, Service to community – When we moved to our current community, there was no power and thefts were happening. He would participate in the night rounds so diligently (sometimes with no company) saying “if we won’t protect our houses, who will?’, Service to anyone who needs help – all were usual and regular part of his life.

Health & Discipline: He maintained excellent health. Daily exercise for years till late 80s. No strains/stress/pressures. He was strong mentally and physically. The discipline of Food, timings and discipline in everything served him very well.

I am sure I can go on and on. It is very surprising how someone with a 3rd term studies/schooling can be so broad-minded, so learned and live a life full of values, teaching and sharing.

He was a super man and Super hero. I hope I'll be able to gain/practice/retain some of the good qualities atleast in portions if not in full. That would make me many times the person that I’m now.

God be with you. I am Lucky to be touched by your kindness. Will miss you in this physical world in many ways.

A post from Seth Godin - About work and expecting Applause

Got this in the mail box today.
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2012/04/dont-expect-applause.html

As with most of his posts, this is insightful and makes you think.

But the reason I post it here, is that I feel I have heard this somewhere before...
..
.
.
.
.
where....
.
.
.
.
Oh!, Someone had said something similar like "Do your work well and don't focus on the results" in a battlefield many eons ago...

Amazing to find connections across thousands of years. Also fits with a lecture I heard on Youtube yesterday from a religious head - Dharma/Good-way-of-life is always same across ages. Just because we are in new/fast age "Be truthful" or the many other tenets do not change.

New Senior Citizen specific mobile from iball

Saw an ad today on T.V. and checked the iball website.
Seems iball has introduced a new series of two mobile phones specially aimed at Senior citizens
http://www.iballmobiles.co.in/product_senior.php

Features like SOS/Emergency button, large buttons with audible beeps etc. Unsure how the reception or feedback will be, but laudable thought from a company to bring out a specific product for the deserving elders

I am boycotting Domino's Pizza from Today

I’ve been a regular unhappy customer of Domino's pizza. I have been fine with their pizzas, their non-spectacular taste, the fact that they don’t provide cutlery for the fact that they are somewhat cheaper on the pocket.

The thing that riled me (repeatedly) is their worst customer service. I have visited many outlets in Chennai and in Bangalore and have noticed that the best of their service is being indifferent.

And of all the outlets, the Mylapore one in R.K Salai, takes the pizza (or the cake if you prefer).

First, If a customer enters to order, he or she is completely ignored. For how long – entirely depends on the whims and fancies of the staff.  For the most part they are busy arguing, joking, jesting among themselves or discussing some very useless matters. In fact, for the most part, the customer has to call to make himself visible to their presence and most of them do that after waiting for the decent amount of time.

Second, in 9 out of 10 times that I’ve had there, they have not had coins for change. Invariably you will be told that the change will be given along with the order and invariably it will be forgotten. The ploy here is to embarrass the customer to come back and ask for small change and if he does not, then pocket the same! What a way to earn your profits!

Third, you just have to wait out your order. I do not think the employees in this place understand that the are working in a place where customers are waiting for food. Again their attention is all on other things and invariably the customer has to come and ask for orders that would’ve been taken out of the oven and sitting on the shelves.

What broke the camels back (or my stomach) was that for the last two consecutive times they forgot to even put my order in the oven. The first time, it was plain forgotten and after I reminded them 20 mins after the order, the dough entered the oven and I got the pizza. The last time, my order was actually given to another person who ordered after me. The staff realized this and then without telling me anything put the dough on the oven. This is again 20 mins after I ordered. After all this, I again had to do step three above, i.e. ask them to pick the ready pizza from the shelf and give to me. It was 35 mins before I had my lunch on that hungry day.

The only person who works in this place are the 2 cleaners that I’ve seen over the last 6 month period. The others are a bunch of boorish, totally non-customer friendly crew.

And here is their CEO announcing his plans to open a 100 more stores in India.

I shudder at the thought of having 100 more stores and 1000 more customer unfriendly souls flooding our lives!

Hence my boycott of Domino's pizza until I hear that they take their customers and customer service seriously. I am sure it does not make one difference to them, but if you also feel and have the same experience, I would recommend and request you to add your comments and then boycott yourself. Hopefully it will give them some reason to change!

Tintin, The noble hero & Tintin, The truthful movie

What I like most about the Tintin stories is that Tintin is an Ideal, Noble, No frills adventurer unlike the regular fare being treated out with the American adventurers and super heroes where female angles, sob stories are an integral part of the mixture.

Got to watch the Tintin movie today. I did have some apprehension after reading a few reviews. The movie has captured the spirit of the Tintin stories well – It is fast paced adventure, Clean comedy, No blood shed or ripping of guts etc, Noble characters that stay true to their characters. Although some complain that the spirit of the captain Haddock and Bianca Castafiore are a bit subdued, I feel that on the whole, it is the best way the clean adventure could’ve have been handled. I am sure Herge did the right choice in handing over the rights to Spielberg. I have decided that in future, I would read the half baked reviewes with a pinch of salt and have more trust on Herge and Spielberg.

I think the end scenes capture the characters in true light.
Tintin is happy that the adventure is over and is looking forward to the next tone.
Captain Haddock is filled with pride and struts with his ancestor’s hat.
Nester is happy to be back with his original Masters.

No one is overly interested or focusing on the Jewels or the Treasure. What a team!

Kudos to Herge on creating the Hero(s) and Kudos to Spielberg on bringing the best of the story and Characters.

If you are even remotely interested or want to show a good, clean, noble movie to your friends or kids (even to neighborhood ones), do them a favor by taking to the movie.
